London Hotel Rates Soaring Up to 500% in Anticipation of Olympics, Survey Reveals

(PRWEB UK) 31 January 2012

With less than six months until the Summer Olympics get underway in London, travelers who have not yet secured a hotel room had better hurry up. Less than 25% of hotels in the British capital still have rooms available, and many of those that remain are coming with big rate increases attached. These are the results of a survey compiled by Cheaphotels.org, which found that London hotels are jacking up their prices as much at 500% leading up to the games.

On average, around 75% of hotels are already sold out during the Olympics timeframe spanning July 27, 2012 through August 12, 2012. As one would expect, weekend stays are a bit pricier than weekday ones. And some London locales are more popular than others. Areas such as Knightsbrige, Chelsea, The City, Victoria and Westminster, for example, are virtually sold out with a half year still to go until the opening ceremonies.

Friday and Saturday night stays will cost out-of-town Olympic attendees the most, with the majority of hotels in the region posting exorbitant price increases. As an example, the Whiteleaf Hotel, which is situated close to Kensington Gardens and regularly goes for £99, is charging £550 per night over the first Olympic weekend. That figure represents a 455% hike over the usual rate.

That’s not the most substantial price elevation, however. The Ascot Hyde Park Hotel is the winner in that department. There, a room that regularly goes for £80 will cost visitors £480 during the Olympics, a whopping 500% more.

Surprisingly, however, a few hotels are still offering rooms near their regular rates. The Bayswater Inn, for instance, which is also close to Kensington Gardens, is charging only £90 for a regular room. Close to the London Zoo, the Avoca House Hotel is posting a £140 rate for a double room.

The following table shows the ten London hotels with biggest rate increases for the first Olympic weekend. The percentages indicated are based on a comparison with regular rates.

1. Ascot Hyde Park Hotel £480 (+500%)

2. Whiteleaf Hotel £550 (+455%)

3. Crown Moran Hotel £533 (+438%)

4. Crowne Plaza London Ealing £448 (+397%)

5. Adare Hotel £406 (290%)

6. The International Hotel £458 (+272%)

7. Queens Park Hotel £300 (+248%)

8. Lord Jim Hotel £373 (+239%)

9. Mercure London Paddington £389 (+229%)

10. London Guards Hotel £376 (+226%)
